Why This Book...
This book is a call for a national conversation about our country’s failure to reach “at-risk” and “underserved” youth in our cities. Alesia encourages us to undertake this pioneering and innovative work. She provides the reader with activities that can be seen as “a springboard for bigger, more audacious, colorful plans and interventions”. Alesia addresses how to work with LGBTQ youth and special populations that include kids with complex grief histories, who have the element of becoming at-risk for gang involvement.
- Amy Liebman Rapp, M.S.Ed, CT, The Sanctuary, New York
With this new work, Alesia has provided a transformative vision and framework for engaging 21st century youth in the tasks of understanding, managing and integrating grief, loss and change in their life journeys. The longstanding joy, passion and commitment that Alesia has brought to community engagement in the grief and loss arena, has been affirmed in this collaborative, intentional and interactive guide.
– Kevin R. Carter, MSW, LCSW Assistant Professor, North Carolina A&T State University
Understanding the ways that loss impacts different kinds of communities is vital; to that end the authors weave "tapestries" of cultures together to explore their norms and traditions. They offer not only ideas about communicating better through art and individual expression; they also posit concrete strategies for breaking down cultural barriers to facilitate listening and healing. Overall, this book offers counselors plenty of ideas and encouragement. An often engaging read for readers interested in cultural aspects of teaching and counseling.
